The F-105D #60-0532 crashed on 10/14/68 after the pilot lost control of the aircraft. The pilot was able to eject safely. Found out about this site from Tom Gosset who visited it a couple weeks ago. He plans on continuing a search for a UC-78 Bobcat that's in the area after showing me the location of the F-105D. The F-105 crash site was rediscovered after a fire burned through the area in 1992.
Driving in on the dirt road off Hwy 14. Plan to meet up with Tom G further up the road.
Tom caught up to me about six miles in. I followed him the rest of the way to the starting point of the hike.
Approaching crash site after hiking for awhile. The impact site is in the rock pile on the left with wreckage scattered just past the rocks on the right.
The first thing we came upon was the ejection seat that was a couple hundred feet from the crash site.
Front view of the seat. Either the pilot waited for the last second to eject or the plane went in steep.
Tom heading off to search for the UC-78 Bobcat while I check out the site. Think that this is his third try at locating the Bobcat.
This piece of the engine was the first thing I checked out. Looks like it's from the turbine section.
