On 9/22/66 the Lockheed Starfighter JF-104A #56-758 USAF crashed near the of town Boron, California. Capt. Claude H. Segrest was on a test flight out of Edwards AFB when there was a uncommanded pitch upward causing lost of control of the aircraft. He was able to eject from 8,000 feet and landed safely 900 feet east of the crash site. A small impact crater and many small pieces scattered a hundred yards to the south of the crater remain at the site.
I was able to locate this crash site by using the crash report provided by Chris Baird. This is the map from the report. Used it to get a general location of the crash site.
After spending a few hours looking over the topo maps and Google Earth, this is the area I figured the F-104 can down.
There was a few of these signs in the area. Didn't know what to make of them??? They were made out of plywood and didn't have the agencies name that posted them. Didn't look very official and there was no warning signs on the roads coming in. After thinking about the warning signs for awhile, I decided to ignore them. This is all BLM land out here and it's in the middle of nowhere.
Didn't take long to find the first piece of wreckage.
Started finding more pieces closer together.
The pieces lead me to what looks like the impact crater. The report stated that the plane made a 19 foot diameter crater, looks a little smaller but it must be it. There was a few good size and lot of tiny pieces around it.
Pieces on the edge of the crater.
This is one of the large pieces I came upon at the site, it was in the crater.
