On 2/13/61, four F-100s on a flight from Cannon AFB, New Mexico while approaching George AFB were given bad DF steers and were vectored 180 degrees in the wrong direction. After finding themselves in mountains, the flight broke up. Two made it back to George AFB, another one had its nose gear collapse after landing on Bicycle Dry Lake. The fourth, F-100D #56-3058 crashed and was totally destroyed after its engine flamed out from lack of fuel. The pilot, Capt. Gerald R Weiland was able ejected safely.
