On 2/12/45, two Lockheed P-38L Lightnings collided and crashed north of Baker, California. Capt. William D. Horton was flying #44-24790 and Capt. Donald L. Webber #44-24807. The airplanes were part of a five ship flight out of Daggett Municipal Airport, California on a scheduled camera gunnery mission. Capt. Horton was flying in the number three position, Capt. Webber was in the number two position. The flight rendezvoused with the target ship and the aircraft began making their camera gunnery passes. The two subject airplanes entered into a pass at the target ship simultaneously, with Capt. Webber in front and slightly below. The airplanes peeled off of the target and collided. Both airplanes went out of control and impacted the desert floor destroying the aircraft and killing both pilots.
