On 8/2/56 two McDonnell F2H-3 Banshees, #126341 piloted by LTJG Tulane Oden Phillips and #126404 piloted by LTJG J. J. Hopps were on a low level simulated Special Weapons mission flight out of Alameda Naval Air Station. The flight was maneuvering through the Owens Valley and then flew up a canyon to cross over the Sierra Mountains. As both planes proceeded up the canyon the wingman sighted the flight leader about a quarter mile behind and slightly below. At this point on, the wingman concentrated on flying his aircraft and he didn't see the flight leaders plane until he barely cleared the mountain ridge and on turning to the right saw a puff of black smoke at the head of the canyon. The F2H-3 #126341 crashed killing the pilot LTJG Phillips and totally destroyed the aircraft. The wreckage of the Banshee came to rest in an area of 12,000 foot peaks in the Sierra Mountains.
