On 3/28/44 a group of USMCR F4U-1s flying with the VMF-124 including #02649 flown by 2nd Lt. Henry Neil Lawson and #56303 flown by 1st Lt. Robert J. Bauman were on a high altitude gunnery mission. When it came to Lt. Lawson’s turn on the target, instead of making a run at it, he turned sharply away. The pilot flying behind him thought that Lawson might be having engine problems, but a short time later he was seen moving back into the formation. The plane approached normally and then pulled up into Lt. Bauman’s plane from below and to the left. There was an explosion and both planes started to spin towards the ground. Lt. Bauman was able to parachute safely, but Lt. Lawson was unable to leave his plane and was killed. The accident investigators were unable to determine the cause of the accident.
