On 1/13/59 the Curtiss C-46F N1240N was on a flight out of Burbank, California to pick up a load of cargo in Seattle, Washington. At the time, the aircraft was on lease to the California Air Freight Company from Slick Airways Inc. When the aircraft failed to arrive at it’s destination, a search was started and the next day was spotted by the Civil Air Patrol on the side of a mountain in Sequoia National Park. The C-46F crashed into the mountain while flying through a snow storm. The pilot Claude Monahan and co-pilot Forrest Kimball were killed in the accident.
Aircraft’s history: This Curtiss C-46F Commando C/N 22404 started off as USAAF #44-78581. In 1948 it was acquired by Alaska Airlines Inc. and was registered as N1240N. Then from 1957-1958 to American Air Export and Import Company aka AAXICO and finally to Slick Airways Inc. in 1958 till 1/13/59 when it was destroyed in the accident.
