On the road to Ballarat. Looking east at the south end of the Panamint Mountains. Heading to Russell Camp where I'll meet up with Sooz and John tomorrow morning for a hike to Manly Peak.
Looking to the west as I drive south towards Goler Wash.
At the entrance to Goler Wash.
Approaching Mengel Pass. Goler Wash was a little rough in places, but no problem.
Just finshed the worse section of road which was coming down from the pass. Banged the truck's frame on a rock coming down a steep rocky section. Striped Butte can be seen on the right.
Pulled in to Russell Camp at sunset. Ate dinner, watched a movie and went to sleep. John and Sooz should be here in the morning.
Sunrise Saturday, wasn't feeling well so went back to sleep. Meeting time is at 9:00am.
The cabin at Russell Camp.
John and Sooz arrived at 8:00am so we checked out the place before starting the hike.
Area in front of the cabins. The hike to Manly Peak starts by going up this canyon.
There was a lot of old stuff in the cabins.
Lot of cool stuff, but didn't look very clean in any of the buildings. We slept in our trucks.
A view of the place from the top of the little hill in back.
John, Sooz and me, Joe ready for the hike to Manly Peak.
This group of off roaders arrived at Russell's as we started the hike.
We hiked up this canyon to the saddle, then followed a ridge to the peak.
Looking back at Russell Camp as we hike up the canyon.
Sooz along side a big rock as we near the saddle.
Looking down into Butte Valley from the saddle.
On the ridge we followed all the way to the peak. Very little brush on this hike.
Striped Butte from the ridge.
Ravens flying overhead.
Looking down the ridge to the saddle.
Another shot of Striped Butte. We'll be hiking it tomorrow.
Manly Peak is the right of the two peaks on the left.
Starting to get close to the peak.
A good view of the ridge we hiked up. The saddle is the low rocky spot.
The pile of big rocks is the summit of Manly Peak.
Just off the summit of Manly Peak, hard to get a good pic on the top.
John is on the summit block at 7,115'.
Telescope Peak to the north.
John climbed this rock pile just below the peak as we started the hike down the ridge.
Great view as we hike down the ridge.
Lot of steep sandy areas which were easy on the legs going down.
Zoomed in on Striped Butte.
We dropped into the canyon just before the one we hiked up. It was steeper and really sandy which was great for going down.
Almost back to Russell Camp where we will spend the night. That silver truck belongs to a couple we met on Manly's summit. We also ran into them while doing Striped Butte and on the road out.
Back at camp.
View to the east just after sunset from the little hill behind camp.
Next morning. This wind chine was made from assorted pieces of junk.
View of Stiped Butte from the little hill behind the cabin.
One last shot shot of Russell Camp before heading to Striped Butte.
Going to check out the other cabins in the area on the way to the butte.
Near by was Stella and Clint's old cabin. We stopped and took a quick look.
Getting closer to the butte.
The Geologist's Cabin, someone was there so we drove on to the butte. These cabins are free to use by anyone.
The south side of Striped Butte. We'll be hiking up the west ridge.
We drove as far as we could then started up to the ridge.
