A ore bin and rusty car full of bullet holes. These are the first signs of mining I came upon in the Skidoo area.
Found this cool looking mine, but it was blocked just past the entrance.
Another rusty car.
Found the millsite I was looking for, but it was on the other side of the canyon. Had to backtrack a little and take a turnoff I past about half mile back.
Zoomed in on the mill.
There was this sign showing the way it once looked.
The sheet metal was all gone and part of the stucture has collapsed. The mines in this area were active off and on from about 1906 to 1970.
Ice at the site. Must have been cold last night.
My shadow on one of the tanks.
Some of the stucture has been rebuilt.
Looking into part of the mill.
It was fun checking out the old rusty machinery. This mill was powered by water piped in from Birch Spring located more than 20 miles away below Telescope Peak.
This is under the area where the stamp mills are. Lot of new surpports.
Two of the three stamp mills.
Me on the mill.
Another view of the stamp mills showing the third one.
Looking up from below.
A large tank that fell from the mill was in the wash.
Driving out on the Skidoo Road. Heading to the Racetrack area for night.
Zoomed in on Red Cathedral and Manly Beacon from the Skidoo Road.
Thimble and Corkscrew Peaks from just past the Stovepipe Wells area.
Made it to the start of the Racetrack Road just after sunset.
The wasboard was worse than I remembered it. Heading for a spot I know of about a mile east of Teakettle Junction. Plan to met John and Sooz there for a hike to Ubehebe Peak tomorrow.
John and Sooz arrived late at night. This is the spot we camped at.
After breakfast, we headed back to the Racetrack Road for the drive to Ubehebe Peak.
John and Sooz checking out the kettles at the junction.
There was twice as many teakettles than I've seen here in the past, cool.
Moo Cow kettles.
The Racetrack and Ubehebe Peak come into view.
Joe(me), John, Sooz and Ken at the trailhead. Ubehebe is the peak on the left. We met Ken at the trailhead, he spent the night near by.
At the start of the hike.
Looking back at the trailhead and Grandstand.
Getting a better view of the Racetrack as we hike up to the first saddle.
On the first saddle, the clouds to the north were starting to get dark.
Our trucks from the saddle.
Looking back to the saddle (light area) and the darking sky as we hike on.
The green pile in the upper right, are tailings from an old copper mine. There is also a wheel barrow in the lower left full of rocks.
Ubehebe Peak from behind the north peak. From here we climbed down to the second saddle and followed the ridge line to a good use trail to the peak.
A peek of the Racetrack as we near the peak.
Me, Ken, John and Sooz on top of Ubehebe Peak with the north end of the Racetrack.
The south end of the Racetrack.
Looking down on the Grandstand and our trucks 2000' below
Zoomed in on the Grandstand.
View to the north up Racetrack Valley.
The wind is blowing hard in Saline Valley to the east. Dust coming off Salt Lake.
Dry Mountain to the north.
The dark clouds are gone now, great looking sky.
John checking out the view as we start down to the second saddle.
