Saw a lot of wild flowers in Greenwater Valley on the way to the trailhead for Smith Mountain. I drove in the day before and spent the night at the trailhead.
The next morning the others arrived. This hike starts in Gold Valley.
Joe(me), Sooz, Chip, Cori, Robin, Kathy, Tom B and Tom G.
Kathy was still recovering from a broken leg which happened last month on Nichols Peak, so she'll being hanging out while we hike Smith.
The hike started off with a one mile hike to the base of the canyon.

At the start of the canyon.
I was hiking slow and caught up to the others taking a break just past the start of the canyon.
Continuing up the canyon.

About half way up the canyon we came upon a short steep section.
The group on the steep part.
Looking down from the top of the canyon.
Up ahead is the false summit that is just before Smith.
Sooz and Chip almost to the false summit.
View of Smith Mountain from the false summit. Most of the group is on the peak with Sooz and Chip just about to reach it.
Zoomed in on Sooz and Chip as they reach the peak.
I'm almost there.

It was Tom's birthday last weekend, so this trip was planed to celebrate it with him.

Looking to the south at "The Narrows" of Death Valley.
To the west was this large alluvial fan which I think is coming out of Warm Spring Canyon.
Just to the north was this wash.
Looking to the northwest across the Badwater Basin to the Panamint Mountains and Telescope Peak.
Zoomed in on Telescope Peak, at 11,049 feet, the highest point in Death Valley.
Zoomed in on the Badwater Basin. Somewhere down there is the lowest point in Death Valley at
282 feet below sea level.
Starting down off the peak.
Hiking over the false summit.
Heading down to the saddle at the top of the canyon we hiked up.
The others decided to hike up to the peak to the southeast of Smith Mountain which is also marked as Smith Mountain on the Topo map, but is 600 feet lower. I haven't been hiking much lately, so one was enough for me.
Looking down the canyon as I start the hike down it.
Approaching the steep section of the canyon.
Leaving the canyon and about to start the one mile hike across the flats back to the vehicles.
Back at the start.
Looking back to the canyon.
Kathy was having a good time just being out. Bet she'll be glad to get that cast off.
The rest of the group returning after hiking up the second peak.
Our camp at Willow Spring.
Hanging out around the campfire.
Tom G gets his birthday cake and balloons.
Tom G with the cake. It was to windy to get all the candles lit, but we managed to get one going so he could make a wish.
