  1. Desert Peaks

Boundary Peak (Almost) 6/25/05

On this hike Kathy got within 200' of the summit while I stopped at a saddle 1000' below. There was still plenty of time, but a bad thunder storm moved in. It was the first time I actually felt electricity on me from a thunder storm and I don't ever want to feel it again. This was the most fear I ever felt in the mountains. It will take a lot less to turn me around next time. Lightning is not to play with.

  • The snow starting to cover the ground, in ten mintutes the ground was white. This is when I started feeling electricity on my forehead and it was getting stronger. I think my body was sending up a streamer reaching for a lighting bolt. Now I know why those folks were runing down.

  • This shot of the peak is from where I stopped running due to triping and falling on my knee. The electricity on my forehead was gone, but how felt it in my hand that I was holding the trekking poles. Scary stuff, didn't want to leave Kathy, but I had to get out of this area. Lightning was striking around me for over half an hour.

  • Down to about the 10,700' level. Haven't heard any thunder for twenty mintues. Still didn't feel safe, most of this hike put me in open areas. I'm on top of a ridge here.

  • Snow on the pack from the higher alitudes where it's still snowing hard. Took a short break here to relax a little after hiking as fast as I could to this point. Thunder in the distance got me moving again.

  • Looking back at Boundary. It's coming down hard above 11'000'. Hoping that Kathy was alright. There was a lot of lightning strikes on the peak while I was making my way down. Never had so many that close before.
