The group that arrived at camp Friday night. Scott with son Lucas, Sooz, John, Joe (me) and Frank.
A view of the Kelso Sand Dunes from camp. Time to drive to the trailhaed for Granite Mountain.
Frank, John, Sooz and me, Joe at the trailhead for the hike to Granite Mountain. Kathy started off about half hour before us.
Near the start of the hike. Granite Mountain is the peak just left of center, on the right is Silver Peak.
Looking east towards the Providence Mountains in the distance.
An old corral in the wash.
Nice flow patterns in the sand from the recent rains.
Nice colors. The first section of the hike followed a wash and the remaining sections of the old mining road that climbs Silver Peak.
This is where we first came upon the water in the wash. A hundred feet up stream it was flowing.
This is just a couple hundred feet from where the water was disappearing into the sand.
Sooz on a section of the old road that leads to a mine on Silver Peak.
Cool looking rock.
Looking back to our starting point just left of the base of the hill.
We took a short break here, it's the spot we left the road and started the XC part of the hike. Haven't found Kathy yet, but we have seen her foot prints.
Found this bone a short time after leaving the road.
Frank and Sooz crossing the stream.
John waiting for the rest of us to catch up.
Looking back at the starting point.
Another bone.
John looking for the best route up this rocky section.
Making our way on the slabs.
We can still see the trailhead. This is one of the few hikes that I been on where you can see your starting point for most of the hike.
Cactus, rocks and trees.
A mini waterfall.
Ice on the rocks. We came across a lot of ice on this hike due to the low night time temps.
Nice looking rocks and trees. This section reminded me of Joshua Tree.
A view of Silver Peak. We were not able to see the top of Ganite Mountain while climbing it, but we knew that it was about 450 feet higher than Silver, so we still have a way to go.
A view to the east, almost to the summit.
We finally caught up to Kathy on the peak, that's her waiting for us. She told us that she lost her camera somewhere on the hike.
Group shot on Granite Mountain at 6,762 feet. Kathy, John, Sooz, me and Frank.
Looking down on Silver Peak which is at 6,300 feet. Climbed it last year.
Zoomed in on Silver Peak. I think that is Telescope Peak in the distance, but I might be wrong.
John signing the peak register.
Looking back into the canyon we hiked up, I can see the trucks from here.
Zoomed in on the trailhead. The arrow points to our trucks.
Looking down on a section of the Kelso Dunes. Most of the dunes along with our camp spot are behind the ridge.
View to the east.
Looking south.
Kathy about to start us on the hike back down the mountain. We are going to try and find her lost camera while hiking out.
Starting off the peak.
The rockman on the left checking out the view.
I like this shot.
Kathy going under the rocks.
More ice.
Sooz with a small ice falls.
It took us a couple of hours to get down through the XC section and back to the road.
