On the road to Ballarat. Plan to camp to the north of Ballarat where I'll meet the others later tonight.
Camp the next morning. Sooz, Chip and Robin are where. Cori, Tom G and Tom B headed up Pleasant Canyon last night so they could get a early start for their hike to Sentinel Peak.
Chip guiding Robin past a tight section in Pleasant Canyon.
Old truck along side the road.
Pleasant Canyon has a lot of wild burros that are descendants of the miner's working burros.
I dropped off Sooz, Chip and Robin on this saddle for their hiked to Porter and Morrmon Peaks.
Robin, Sooz and Chip at the start of their hike.
They head off on their hike and I'll drive to the start of my hike to Slim's Peak.
Driving up the World Beater Mine Road.
Looking down into Pleasant Canyon from the saddle from where I'll start my hike from. Was surprised that the road climbed up this far. The topo map showed it ending about a 1000 feet below.
Looking down at the saddle where I parked. The other vehicle belongs to the guys with Tom G's brother Richard which got a earlier start on the hike.
The Panamint Valley comes into view as I gain a little altitdue on the ridge.
Slim's Peak. I was expecting a 1.8 mile hike with a 2,200 foot gain, but due to the road climbing as much as it did, it's turning out be under a mile with about 1,200 foot gain.
Zooming in on the peak, I could see two of the guys on it's summit and another one about there.
Almost there.
Justin, Richard and Gary on the peak.
Me on the peak.
Richard, Justin and Gary heading down. They got to the peak about half hour before I did.
The summit register.
View to the northwest of the Panamint Valley and the Sierra beyond.
Zoomed in on the snow covered Sierra Mountains.
View to the northeast, Sentinel Peak on the rigth.
The trucks parked on the saddle in the upper right.
Zoomed in on the trucks at the saddle.
Telescope Peak to the north.
When I got back to the saddle, the others already were on their way down the World Beater Road.
I could see them on a switchback .
Zoomed in on the guys on a switchback.
Driving down the road.
Approaching the World Beater Mine.
At the mine site.
Inside the World Beater Cabin. Stopped here to have lunch in the cabin. The plan was for me to pick up Sooz, Robin and Chip in Morman Gulch, but since my hike turned out to be a lot shorter than I was expecting I had some time to kill.
View out one of the cabin's windows.
Back in Pleasant Canyon on the way back to Ballarat after picking up the hikers. This mine site is Clair Camp. Would have liked to stopped and checked the place out, but it's been a long day and just wanted to get back to camp before dark.
Another view of Clair Camp as we drive by.
More burros along side the road.
Some sections of the lower canyon were wet and overgrown.
Driving into the sun made driving hard at times.
This was the only section of the canyon road where four wheel drive was needed.
