Sooz at the start of the hike. It's been five years since I did this hike to the Windcaves, hope I can remember the route to get there.
The hike starts off on a trail.
But later you have to follow a wash for awhile.
There is a lot of ocotillos in the area.
Back on the trail.
Interesting rock formations along the way.
From the trail we got a good view of the Carrizo Badlands.
Zoomed in on a section of the Badlands.
Almost to the caves.
First view of the Windcaves.
Closer view of the Windcaves.
We are here.
Look inside. The weather was on the warm side so after reaching the caves, we took a snack break inside where the temps were a lot cooler.
Sooz and Joe(me) inside the cave.
Looking out the back door.
Sooz looking in the window.
Smaller caves.
View of the other side.
Sooz looking for fossils in the wash next to the caves.
The area has a lot of shell fossils.
Fossil
Fossil still enbedded in the rock.
This is a nice one.
Lot of shells in the rock.
After checking out the fossils, we hiked to the dome to the east of the caves.
On the dome.
Sooz checking out the view from the dome.
Looking at the backside of the Windcaves from the dome.
View to the north.
View to the east.
Starting the hike out.
Sooz and an ocotillo with the Carrizo Badlands in the background.
On the way out, we found another area with fossil shells.
Further down the trail, we found another area with a lot of sand dollars.
Sand dollar
They were a lot of them, but we weren't able to find one that wasn't broken.
Back in the wash.
Almost back to the trailhead. It was a fun hike with a lot of interesting stuff. THE END
