My hike to Echo Mountain starts from Chaney Trail Road. Was planning on hiking up the Sam Merrill Trail, but so people were doing it that there wasn't any parking in the area.
A short way past the gate was this sign telling about the Mount Lowe Railway.
Continuing up the Mount Lowe Road. A trail leading to Echo Mountain joins up off this road in about two and a half miles from the start.
You get good views of the city form the road. This looking to the southwest, toward JPL.
Zoomed in on JPL.
Looking to the south, that's LA in hazy.
Zoomed in on downtown LA.
That's the Sam Merrill Trail across the canyon leading to Echo Mountain.

Here's where the trail to Echo Mountain comes off the Mount Lowe Road.
Marker at the start of the trail, half of a mile to go.
This trail used to be the part of the Mount Lowe Railroad.
This shot show how the trail I'm on meets up with the Sam Merrill Trail.
Zoomed in, you can see some people on the trail.
Coming up to Sentinel Rock.
Looking back at Sentinel Rock. Some of the railroad ties are on the trail in a few places. The sign tells about the rock and a little about the railroad.
Looking ahead at some of the supports from one of the many bridges that were along the railway.
Almost there.
There are a lot of these signs on the history of the area.
Looks like someone put together some parts for a display. It's placed over what looks like a maintenance pit.
This is a picnic area now. Use to be the dance hall and tennis courts.
This tree looks like it's growing in the middle of was once small building.
Parts from the cable mechanism from the incline railway that came up Rubio Canyon.
Close up of the cable.
After all these years, some of the jaws on the bull wheel still move freely.
Another view.
Looking down where the tracks for the incline use to be.
Another view down the incline from the boarding steps.
Sign showing one of the incline cars at the top.
This photo shows the steps that were shown on the sign.
The echo phone, the cutoff old post is where one was mounted before.
Closer view.
Looking through the Echo Phone. I tried it out, it works, got a good echo back.
This was the water reservoir for the area.
It's filled with brush that was cleared from the area.
