A view of Lone Pine Peak (right) from the back of my truck Friday morning. I spent the night at Tuttle Creek Campground. After getting cleaned up, drove into Lone Pine to meet the rest of the group for breakfast.
Driving up the Whitney Portal Road on my way to the Meysan Lake Trailhead, the start of our hike. Great view of Mount Whitney from the road.
The group at the trailhead getting their stuff together for the hike.
Rob, Jay, Kathy, Sooz, John and Joe(me). We are ready to start the hike to Grass Lake where we will set up camp for the weekend.
Looking down at the Alabama Hiills from a short way into the hike.
Kathy on the trail. The Meysan Lake Trail is really steep compared to most of the trails in the Sierra.
Rob with the northwest face of Lone Pine Peak.
This is at around 10,000 feet, a lot of nice loooking trees at this level.
Grass Lake at 10,800 feet, this area will be our camp for the next two days.
Mount Irvine above Grass Lake.
The reflection Mount Irvine in Grass Lake.
John, Sooz and Jay relaxing at Grass Lake.
While fishing, Sooz got a lure stuck in the rocks and had to go in to save it.
Nice cloud formations. We had great weather on this trip.
Looking down on Peanut Lake from the area we set up camp.
Hanging out after dinner.
The end of the first day. Tomorrow we hike up to the summit of Lone Pine Peak.
Me, Jay, Sooz, John, Kathy and Rob in back, ready to start the hike to Lone Pine Peak. Scot and Susan planed to day hike it to the peak and were going to meet us somewhere along the route.
Crossing the stream at the start of the hike. This stream is near camp and was our water supply for the weekend.
Kathy up ahead. Just past the stream we had to climb a lagre patch of snow. The ski tracks are from John who was boot skiing the day before. This is the only snow we had to cross on the hike.
Starting up the chute that we climbed for 1500 feet to reach a saddle. The chute was much larger than it looked like from a distance. The two people ahead are Jay and John with Sooz just ahead of me.
Looking down on Peanut Lake as we start the climb up the chute. Our campsite is in the center , left of photo.
The sun rising from behind the ridge.
Looking up the chute at Kathy and Rob. The chute was steep and loose which made for slow going till we reached the saddle.
Those two spots in the center of the clearing are Susan and Scot. They started from the trailhead at 6:00am and caught up to us.
As we climb, the summit of Mount Whitney appears from behind a ridge.
Scot and Susan are getting closer.
We are about falf way up the chute at this point.
The low spot is the top of the chute. It's further than it looks.
Meysan Lake comes into view at the base of Mt Irvine. The higher we climb the nicer the views get.
Scot and Sooz taking a breather. Nice looking pile of rocks near the top of the chute.
Susan near the top.
Rob waiting for us at the top of the chute.
Looking down on Grass and Peanut Lakes from the top of the chute.
A view to the north from the saddle.
Great view of Meysan Lake.
After climbing the chute, we headed up to the ridge that we would follow to the summit.
Up on the ridge looking at the first false summit. Those two dark spots near center are Kathy and Rob.
Making our way through the rocks.
Almost there, some of the group are already on the peak.

A new summit register was placed here by Cori (SnowNymph) just the week before.
