A view of Mount Morgan and Little Lakes Valley taken last year from the summit of Mount Starr.
Heading to Rock Creek Lake where I'll meet Kathy for the hike to Mount Morgan after spending the night near the Owens River Gorge.
Looking back at Rock Creek Lake from a short way into the hike.
Entering the John Muir Wilderness.
Trail junction to Francis Lake. Last weekend when I tried this hike I hiked a quarter mile past this before I realized I missed it.
Hiking past Kenneth Lake.
Our first view of Mount Morgan as we near Francis Lake.
There were a lot of flowers along thr trail.
Francis Lake. We used the clear area on the slope to climb up to the ridge. Last week I followed the canyon up and ended up on a boulder field.
Francis Lake again from the inlet side. The lake is just past the half way point in distance, but at 10,900' it's only about a quarter of the way in altitude.
Looking down on Francis from the slope. The trail ends at the lake, the rest of the way will be XC.
Kathy on the slope. It's steep and loose, but only about a 300' gain to the ridge.
Looking down the ridge we are following up. This part was easy.
Kathy nearing the top of the ridge.
The boulder field down in the canyon I hiked through last weekend. I don't recommend coming up the canyon.
From here we headed to the lowest saddle on the main ridge.
Looking back as we make our way to the saddle.
On the saddle at about 12,500'. From here we'll follow Morgan's northwest ridge to the summit.
This is the first of a three shot view looking southwest to northwest from the saddle.
Mount Starr to the west. The first shot in this album was taken from it's summit last year.
Rock Creek Lake barely shows to the northwest.
Starting up the northwest ridge from the saddle..
Looking back at Rock Creek Lake as we climb away from the saddle.
Zoomed in on Rock Creek Lake our starting point about 3,000' below. The white dots are boats.
Most of the lakes in Little Lakes Valley come into view as we climb the ridge. Only a few can be seen from Morgan's summit.
Zoomed in on Marsh Lake.
And Heart Lake.
A window along the ridge. Most of the way we were hiking just below the ridge on the left side.
We heard what sounded like 10 seconds of thunder. Turn out the be a slide (center of photo).
Zoomed in on the slide. Think that this is the east side of Mt Abbot.
There were a few steep sections, but most of this hike was easier than we thought it was going to be.
Getting close to the summit. That's Kathy up ahead, we didn't see another person all day.
Flowers and a view to the northwest.
There were a lot of these flowers above 12,000'.
Closer look at the pink colored suncups.
Kathy looking down from the summit. She's a faster hiker than me.
Kathy and me on the summit of Mount Morgan 13,748'.
Looking to the northeast towards the White Mountains across the Owens Valley.
That green area in the valley is the town of Bishop.
Zoomed in on Bishop.
Nice looking ridge line with Mount Tom at the end.
Closer view of Mount Tom.
Looking to the southeast.
Zoomed in on Mount Humphreys.
Kathy using a map to locate the peaks in the area. The views from this peak are the best I've seen in the eastern Sierra.
