The route we used for the hike to Spanish Needle started near the Chimney Peak Campground. We'll follow the PCT to a saddle, then traverse a slope to the peak.
Kathy started hiking just ahead of us, she waited here for us to catch up.

This is our first good view of Spanish Needle, the peak on the left.

Starting on the XC section.
The view was really nice from this slope, but I spent most of the time watching my step.
When we got to the saddle, the GPS showed the peak less 0.7 of a mile away.
But hiking on this steep loose slope made for slow going.
Sooz with a view to the southeast.
Picking a route to the peak was tricky. We were lucky that Tom has done is hike before and was leading the way. Here we had to climb down a little to get around a steep section.
The group making their way over one of the few rock piles we had to hike over.
Kathy climbing a steep ridge that John went up. She ended up climbing down and we went around this little peak on the ridge.
Looking back to the saddle from the ridge. We left the saddle over 2 hours ago, was surprised to see how close it still is.
This shot shows John on the summit of Spanish Needle. Tom was still climbing to the peak while the rest of us decided the climb was to much to handle.
This shot shows Tom making his way to the peak (arrow) and John with his arms in the air standing on the actual summit.
Zoomed in on John and Tom as they start climbing down off the peak.
The guys crossing the friction slab just below the peak. Just out of view on the left is a big drop off.
Climbing down the ridge as we start the hike back to the saddle.
John and Sooz are in the middle of this shot crossing the rocks.
Almost back to the saddle. We ended up taking three different routes back to the saddle.
Back at the saddle. The others got there before John, Sooz and I. They waited for us before starting down the trail.
Looking back at the peak and saddle as we start the long 6.5 mile hike on the PCT back to the trailhead.
We did the last hour of the hike in the dark.
Back at the trailhead, we were all happy to end this hike.
Driving out the next morning, this is one hike I never plan on doing again.
